Aristide MAILLOL sculpted a version of the "La Pomone" for the War Memorial in Elne
and a bust of Etienne Terrus, whom he recognised as a great painter.
The town preserves the memory of these great artists, both of whom could translate
the light and warmth of the region into their art.
Through their work, Matisse's friends gave a new impetus to painting: 'Fauvism'.
THE ETIENNE TERRUS MUSEUM
The museum is dedicated to Etienne Terrus (1857-1922), painter and friend of Matisse, Derain, Marquet, Camoin, and Luce who he invited to his studio.
He was an uncontested Master of watercolour but didn't belong to any School of painting or Tendency, although his later works show a clear Fauvist influence.
The ground floor is reserved for Terrus and his friends. The other two floors are home to Contemporary Painters who have lived and worked in Elne. There is also an annexe for temporary exhibitions.
Also visit in the upper town, the galleries (painters, sculptors, glass- blower, master glass artist).
VISITS TO THE MUSEUM - YOU ARE WELCOME EVERY DAY :
From october to april : Open everiday exept Monday from 10am to 12:00 and from 2 pm to 6.
From may to September : Open everyday from 10am to 7pm Closed : Janaury 1st, from 19 th December 2011 to 8th 2012, December 25 th, may 1st.
Fees : 4,5 € - 3,5€ - 2 € and package entrance « ILLIBERIS » for 2 or 3 sites
